Grief is the natural human response to loss, and it is far more expansive than most people realize. While the death of a loved one is the most recognized form, Coloradans also grieve miscarriages, the loss of pets who were family, estrangement from children or parents, the end of careers, and the destruction of homes — a reality that hits close for communities affected by Colorado's increasing wildfire seasons, including the devastating Marshall Fire that displaced thousands.
Colorado's culture of resilience and self-sufficiency, while admirable, can make grief feel unwelcome. The implicit message is often to "stay strong," "keep busy," or "get back out there." But grief that is suppressed does not disappear — it manifests as irritability, exhaustion, physical pain, numbness, or difficulty functioning in ways that may not be immediately recognized as grief.
At Rocky Mountain Thrive, we believe grief deserves dedicated space. Our online therapy sessions provide a confidential, compassionate environment to process your loss — no matter what form it takes — from anywhere in Colorado.
Grief has no timeline. Some people begin to adjust within months; others carry acute grief for years. Both experiences are valid. However, there are signs that professional support could help you navigate the process more gently. These include persistent difficulty accepting the loss, intense longing that does not ease, feeling that life has no meaning or purpose, withdrawal from relationships and activities, and intrusive thoughts or images related to the loss.
Prolonged grief disorder, recognized in the DSM-5, affects an estimated 7 to 10 percent of bereaved individuals and is characterized by grief that remains intense and impairing well beyond what might be expected. It is not a sign of loving someone too much — it is a condition that responds well to targeted therapeutic intervention.
You may also be navigating complicated grief, where conflicting emotions like relief and guilt coexist, or disenfranchised grief, where your loss is not socially acknowledged. A therapist trained in grief work can help you make sense of these layered experiences without judgment.
Meaning-Making Therapy: Rather than asking you to "move on," we help you integrate the loss into your life story, finding meaning and maintaining a continuing bond with what or who you have lost.
Dual Process Model: This evidence-based framework acknowledges that healthy grieving involves oscillating between confronting the loss and taking breaks to engage with ongoing life — we help you find that balance.
Complicated Grief Treatment: For prolonged or complicated grief, we use structured protocols that gently address avoidance, process painful memories, and help you reengage with your life.
Somatic Grief Work: Because grief lives in the body as much as the mind, we incorporate body-based techniques to release tension, process stored emotion, and restore a sense of groundedness.
We welcome clients experiencing any type of loss. Sessions are conducted via secure video, accessible to residents throughout Colorado. We accept Medicaid and many private insurance plans.
